Helloo! Happy birthday Ferry! I just finished reading rough, and the way you drew backgrounds is just... *mwah* chef's kiss!
The lines are so crisp and very angular, it's kinda reminiscent of old brutalist building, also the way you draw them make it blends really well with your character! Do you have any tips on how to draw backgrounds like that?
Thank you so much, I love drawing backgrounds!!!
I do them with the same brush I use for lining characters, but 1-2 px thinner. I usually try to add as much detail as I reasonably can to make the environments feel more lived in, and tbh hatching does most of the heavy lifting here - it really isn't that hard to create an illusion of detail if you scribble on a bunch of lines and grain lol. It's just time consuming
In the end I do a little whiteout around the characters so that they don't blend into the background.
I also like to reference real life locations for my backgrounds! Pretty much all the environments in Rough were based on my Minsk neighborhood
Like look, that's the bridge...
