The Zero Comment Challenge is a way for readers to find new stories and reach out to authors they want to encourage. 

Every fandom has stories that get lost in the shuffle. Maybe they were posted during a busy time and didn’t get much attention. Maybe the author didn’t tag as effectively as they could have to get their story in front of the audience it was intended for. Maybe the fandom is just really shy so they leave kudos instead of comments. 

The Zero Comment Challenge is meant to find those authors and give them some love. Go to the AO3 search and filter by comments, then look at the fics that don’t have any comments at all. Find one that looks interesting to you and let the author know what you thought. They get to meet a new reader and you get to find new fic. Everyone wins!

"i don't comment on ao3 because i don't wanna be annoying or weird" skill issue + you greatly underestimate the power dynamic here, writing multi paragraph comments is like feeding a bunch of deeply insane and possibly starved ducks at the park and watch them go completely mad over having received a piece of bread

Her head was still in her hands when she stepped out of the elevator, causing her to nearly run into Beetee. He had been waiting for her at the elevator.

“How did it go?”

“I followed the plan,” Maze replied, not even trying to mask the despair in her voice. “But then I messed it all up.”

“Oh? What happened?”

Maze bit her lip. “I gave the dummy a stupid voice.”

Beetee raised an eyebrow.

“You gave the dummy a…stupid voice?” He couldn’t hide the astonishment in his own voice.

It has to be Cells At Work: Realisations by Corvus_Albus on AO3! That fic is so fluffy I could die and I’ve reread it at least five times at this point ❤️

👮: If one of your fics was going to get you arrested, which one and why?

Back in like 2013 I wrote this fic called “Autumn White and the Five Strange Wizards” where an 11-12 year old girl was in an implied relationship with an ancient timeless man in the body of an 11-12 year old boy, so…yeah. It was also not a very good fic, as the titular character was very much a Mary Sue and I made my Warrior Cats self-insert OC randomly appear in the fic for no reason.

🧠: What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?

I’ve been wanting to write another SPY x Family fic for a while, a longer one where Anya gets kidnapped by the scientists who experimented on her and Loid and Yor have to rescue her and they all find out their secret identities and it’s angsty and dramatic but also fluffy

Unto the Labyrinth: Chapter 7

Soon, the plate beneath Maze’s feet began rising, taking her with it. The tunnel plunged Maze into darkness, and she gulped, nausea clenching her stomach.

This was it.

Thirty seconds later — which felt like an eternity to Maze; the launch room must have been deep underground— she emerged into bright light. She blinked a few times, before taking in the sight of the arena before her.

I enjoy the Two Cakes Philosophy and I believe it deserves its place enshrined in fandom culture.

Forgive me for the extended metaphor but I also want to simultaneously celebrate what I’m calling Bakery Display Case Philosophy. You know when you walk into a bakery and the display case is full of beautiful treats? And there’s a variety of different colors, textures, and flavors to discover? And that’s so deeply exciting?

You might say to yourself, “No one is going to want to read this pairing. No one is going to want to want a character study of that character. No one wants genfic in this fandom, only shipfic.”

And you might use that to discourage yourself from writing a certain fic.

Fandoms, like bakeries, need cakes and cookies and éclairs and cream puffs and shortbread and brownies and pies and tarts and petit fours and turnovers and cinnamon rolls and madeleines and meringues—and so many other things—to survive.

Write your dark chocolate pistachio croissant fic. Your fandom needs it actually.
