Make no mistake, the Dursleys are terrible people and unquestionably abusers.
But the one favor they did for Harry was never pretend as though they loved him. Vernon and Petunia made it very clear: You are not a part of this family. We don’t like you and never will.
They didn’t try to frame their abuse as “for Harry’s own good.” They didn’t try to make Harry believe that he could earn their love through good behavior. They didn’t tell him they loved him just as much as they loved Dudley, then subtly treat him like shit.
They were honest. And that honesty allowed Harry to put some emotional distance between himself and the Dursleys, even before Hogwarts. Because if the Dursleys don’t like him, then he didn’t have to like them.
Instead of vying for the Dursleys’ affection, Harry basically snarks his way through childhood, relishing in his status as an outsider. His early descriptions of the Dursleys are practically dripping with razor-sharp snark about their appearances and foibles. He finds comfort in the knowledge that a) he dislikes the Dursleys as much as they dislike him, and b) he alone sees these cartoonishly awful people for who they are.
#this and the tags say everything
I think that generally accepted fan headcanon that Leia would wish OW was her dad over Anakin or not understanding why Padmé fell for him instead of OW is unfunny and baseless. Mostly coping mechanisms for people who hate Anakin or severely project themselves inside or project something inside OW.

My Reading List
Just wanna say that If Anakin only loved the “idea” of Padmé, his “vision” of her would’ve been shattered when he found out she was secretly conspiring behind his back against Palps, while keeping it a secret from him in the ROTS novel. But he quite literally says this instead:
Anakin doesn’t care what Padmé does even if it goes against what he believes in or if *hypothetically* that shatters the image of her, which it doesn’t btw, because we see she’s still his precious wife. And that’s because he doesn’t love the idea of her. He only loves her for her. Just like Padmé, he accepts all of her even when he doesn’t agree with her.
Another perfect example is how Anakin even as Vader, still continues to love Padmé after he thought she was teaming up with Obi Wan to have him killed. Literally the first thing he asks is “where is Padmé? Is she safe? Is she alright?” (while still believing, she betrayed him.) that’s called unconditional love. And when he’s told that he was the one who “killed her”, his immediate thoughts are:
“this burns hotter than the lava had.” Again, all while thinking she had betrayed him.
#absolutely
#and, like, it shouldn't even be that difficult to understand because it's really literally the core of the saga 😭
the story showed luke’s love bringing anakin ‘back’ in the end. the movie is called return of the jedi. “i am a jedi like my father before me”.
so why, then, would you think the message is “anakin was actually a toxic abusive evil piece of shit all along”, “padmé was a dummy who didn’t see red flags”, “anakin never genuinely loved padmé [or by extension luke]”, “anakin’s love was superficial”, etcetera etcetera? like 😭 just utilizing critical thinking and looking at the core story being told as well as the genre, why would you take those messages away? why would you not look at the skywalker family as people who loved each other deeply, lost each other because of evil (the dark side), and were set free by luke’s compassionate love and ability to release them?
As opposed to hundreds of years later... when you're younger.
"How do you write such realistic dialogue-" I TALK TO MYSELF. I TALK TO MYSELF AND I PRETEND I AM THE ONE SAYING THE LINE. LIKE SANITY IS SLOWLY SLIPPING FROM BETWEEN MY FINGERS WITH EVERY MEASLY WORD THEY TYPE OUT. THAT IS HOW.
What the hell is Star Wars even about???
