I saw one REALLY good piece of writing advice which is try to avoid using the protagonists pronouns bc it creates "psychic distance" between the reader and the protag. so avoid using "I/he/she/they saw the window" and instead describe the window, because it's implied the protag is looking at the window if you're describing it, if that makes sense.
so instead of: "I looked to the sky and saw birds flying above." you would write something like "Up in the sky, birds flew in formation." which not only gives a better description of the event, but allows the reader to feel part of it, rather than just observing an observer. obviously there are instances where you have to use pronouns, in most action sentences you need them. but things relating to the senses can be described without creating that distance
...From someone with adhd.
I very rarely see books with well written characters with ADHD, and when I do, it’s always represented the same way. It ISN’T, ‘yeah so I was at Jane’s house on- oh, look, a squirrel!’.
Here’s what (in my experience), it IS:
there’s a common stereotype that people with ADHD talk a lot- but no one ever mentions that we talk fast
bouncing your leg a lot when seated
losing your train of thought often, and getting sidetracked trying to find it again.
forgetting instructions relayed seconds before
repeating a story without realizing it in conversations (‘did I tell you about..’)
feeling that ‘tired yet wired’ feeling at the end of a long day
accidentally talking over people often
having really poor time management skills. constantly misjudging how much time certain tasks will take. losing track of time often
Iiking distraction (i.e. usually having an earbud in)
leaving projects until the last minute and then doing them at the speed of light
NOTE: the absolute worst thing you can do is make having ADHD a characters only trait. They should be a full, interesting character who just happens to have ADHD. Here’s an easy test to see if you’ve done it right: If you ‘take away’ the ADHD and the character has no defining traits? You’ve done it wrong.
Again. This is my experience and therefore may not apply to everyone, but I just thought I’d share in case it helps anyone out!
tony stark would do everything in his power to please peter parker, and if i say everything, i meant everything.
Hi, what's going on? Today I don't have a new chapter, but that doesn't mean I didn't write anything. You know that I have a project about helping writers, right? I decided to restart it through Patreon subscriptions and some free posts here on tumblr as well. And that's what got me writing a lot this week. The theme was Premise and Theme, essential concepts for writing a book. While I was preparing the post and organizing my ideas, I found myself analyzing what my motivation for writing was, realizing that I had put it aside. Which reminded me why I'm still here after more than ten years, still writing and creating new stories.
The truth is that I'm very… well, it's hard for me to get in touch with my emotions and there are certain experiences I'm not willing to have in real life, apart from wanting to investigate the human mind. As an aromantic and asexual person, writing is my refuge and my therapy. I write about things I'll never experience, things I've seen elsewhere, things I feel and things I'd like to experience, but because of my social difficulties I know I'll never get there.
That's the reason for this post, to discuss and organize my thoughts, mostly about writing, to share what I dedicate my time to and to tell you a little more about myself, to also remind me why I still insist on writing and why I'll probably never give up. And of course, I'd like to invite you to join my Patreon, where next week I'll start presenting information on how to write narrative books. I hope to see you there (if you can read Portuguese).
Hi, how's going? I have a few chapters ready and I'm getting to a more smutt moment, so I was wondering if anyone would like to see something specific? Or something that matches their personalities? If you have any suggestions I'll be happy to hear^^
Reading a book: “Ah, yes, brilliant. That totally makes sense. How clever!”
Attempting to write a book: “I am a complete and utter fraud. Who gave me permission to wield words? Someone revoke my keyboard.”
Suzanne Collins gripping my face with her hands: listen listen the first step to evil is dehumanisation, always, the second you start to see people as less than people no matter what they've done to you that's when you start heading down a path of selfish destruction and violence
WIPS in my notes app:
Do you want to know about my WIPS? You're talking to the right person! Because I hardly ever finish my stories (although I'm 10% short of finishing one). Now, I don't know about the titles being interesting. But here they are! (I'm die hard Percy/Nico writer)
Sitter's Love (A nanny that needs money for college, ends up falling in love with the dad of the kids)
There's Nothing Like home (A boy who retorns home, who is eternaly in love by his bestfried)
Secrets (A story in Portuguese about two boys who were raised in the same house as brothers, but who are definitely not)
Mandatory service (Story in Portuguese based on a world where everyone is either submissive or a dominant)
I could stay here forever, but I think it's just enough!🤣🤣🤣🤣

Rules: make a new post with the names of all the files in your wip folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have wips or close enough, idk, I'm not a cop
