Last Night I Had A Dream About This Cat Who Was A College Professor Of Media Studies. In The Dream, He

Several drawings of a thin dark orange cat. In the first drawing, he is standing, wearing a pale green blazer, and saying, “Alright class, can anyone explain what Alfred Gato meant when he compared the Ragamuffin Revolution to peanut butter?”. In the second drawing he is walking with a backpack on his back, a necklace with a key on it around his neck, a smart watch on his front leg, and carrying a bag of fast food in his mouth. The third, fourth, and fifth drawings are just of his face, one happy, one sad, and one nervous. In the drawing of him nervous, he is saying, “S-Sure… I can do the speech at the literary conference… In front of f-five hundred people.” The sixth drawing is of the cat sitting, wearing a green tie and a smart watch. In the six drawing, he is nervously clutching his head with his front paws, staring down at his open backpack with all its contents spread across the ground. Here he is saying, “Don’t tell me I lost my bus ticket! How am I supposed to get back home to my kids now?”

Last night I had a dream about this cat who was a college professor of media studies. In the dream, he was freaking out because he’d misplaced his bus ticket, which he needed to get home to his two kids (he’s a single dad by the way), and was asking everyone he could for $20 to buy a new one.

Got no name for him yet, but my friends and I are workshopping one. Right now, I’m leaning towards Henry Calico.

Also, I’ve decided he’s now Alex and Zahra’s teacher. Yes, he is a teacher at a mostly human school.

A drawing of a humanoid pink dog and a humanoid brown lion with hooves walking together. The dog is a teal sleeveless sweater and shorts with matching piercings and jewelry. The lion is wearing a pink and yellow striped top and skirt with matching piercings and jewelry.

I hit the random character button on ArtFight and came across taffypet’s cute furry pink polyamorous boygirl. I just had to draw him with my own furry pink(loving) polyamorous boygirl. It was a fun challenge designing their outfits and playing around with the colors. Went with a sleeveless top and shorts for Henny because I just love her patterns too much to cover them.

A four panel Murderbot Diaries fan comic.

Panel 1: A depiction of ART/Perihelion’s consciousness, represented as a floating black sphere surrounded by criss-crossing blue rings with black and white spheres lining them. Across the main sphere is binary code and ART saying “Hi SecUnit, Miss me?” as it hovers over the humanoid cyborg Murderbot (also known as SecUnit), who is laying on the ground wounded and bleeding. The background is faded binary code.

Panel 2: A close-up of Murderbot’s face, injured and with an expression of intense worry. There are a few lines of red binary code floating above its head.

Panel 3: Still a close-up of Murderbot, but its expression has shifted to one of relief and the binary code is now green.

Panel 4: Murderbot’s expression has shifted to anger as it shouts “Fuck you ART!” ART replies, “Well fuck you too.” The binary code is now gray.

Fun fact, when one of my friends got to the part of Network Effect where it’s revealed that ART died(?), I played along that it was dead for good and then immediately after started drawing this for when she got to the part where ART came back.

Nother fun fact, ART is based partly on an ophanium, those angels that are just wheels/rings with eyes.

Extra bonus fun fact, if you want to see the full binary and translate it, go here. Warning, it is long. So long I had to make a Dropbox account for it.

Drawing of the cyborg Murderbot with a sad expression curled up in a blanket while viewing a holographic video. Behind it is the text: “All I wanted to do was watch media and not exist”. The full background is black with gray and red binary.

Quote from Fugitive Telemetry. Scene set between Network Effect and System Collapse.

The binary is in ASCII, Unicode, and ASCII/UTF-8. Whichever you pick, it will translate to the same thing.

Drawings of the abstract form of the Murderbot Diaries character, ART/Perihelion. It typically looks like a black sphere with binary code on its surface, surrounded by blue rings lined with smaller black and white spheres. In the main, image ART is saying, “Do not attempt to hack my systems”.

However, its appearance changes slightly based on the situation.

In one image, ART is a black sphere, surrounded by three blue rings. Where the rings intersect is a black eye. It has four wispy blue wings and a ring of white spheres surrounding it.
This image is labeled with the text: “If it looks like this‪, RUN!‬ Or watch several weeks worth of TV with it, I guess. I mean, it’s your semi-artificial consciousness on the line.”

In another image, ART is a blue sphere with six wispy pale blue wings and a ring of dark blue circles behind its wings.
This image is labeled with the text: “Oh, so you did watch TV with it…‪Cool.”‬

‪In the image labeled “Quiet/Focused”, ART’s rings are lying flat around the main sphere with the smaller dots inside the rings.‬

‪In the image labeled “Compressed” ART is a sphere wrapped in black feathery wings. When the wings are unfurled, the sphere underneath is bright blue with binary code flowing through it.‬

‪In the image labeled “‬Number of rings varies from 1 - question mark” ART is a black sphere surrounded by four blue rings.

Some drawings of ART/Perihelion, or rather what ART looks like to other machines. ART usually takes the bottom middle form, but its appearance varies based on its mood and/or what it’s doing.

Do augmented humans see it like this too? I’m not sure yet, but right now I am leaning towards “some of them”.

Based on an ophanim (those wheel/ring angels), planetary systems, and Bohr atom models.

Bonus spoiler character from Book 5: Network Effect under the cut

Murderbot 2.0

A drawing of the Murderbot Diaries character Murderbot 2.0. It is a white sphere with turquoise binary code on its surface. It is surrounded by a segmented turquoise ring.

[Image Description: A Fat, Dark-skinned Person Wearing Glasses, Dressed In A Loose Pink Shirt And Pants,

[Image Description: A fat, dark-skinned person wearing glasses, dressed in a loose pink shirt and pants, and with their dark curly hair tied back in a bun is standing on a balcony, their back to the viewer. They are calmly viewing the row of forested hills in front of them and the sky that is bright and partly cloud. End of image description.] Wanted to practice drawing backgrounds, so I tried my hand at doing some hills and a daytime sky. The character was originally going to Matonne, but decided to draw Alex again instead.

Been practicing drawing jumping spiders. I still have quite a ways to go in drawing one of my favorite animals, but I’m still pretty proud of how this quick little drawing turned out.

A reference drawing of my interpretation of the cyborg character Murderbot.

It has very dark brown skin and darker hair and a lean muscular build. While most of its body is covered in skin, a few parts, mostly its neck, abdomen, back of head, and spine, and energy projectiles on its arms are covered in black metal.

Its joints, the seems on its face, and the sclera of its eyes change color based on the danger level of the situation it is in. Technically the danger level is an indicator of how much danger Murderbot thinks those it is concerned with are in. The colors go from turquoise to green to black to bright red, with turquoise being high safety (something the company did not expect any of their secunits to be involved in) and bright red being extreme danger. The most commonly expressed colors are green to medium red.

One of the full body drawings shows Murderbot with buzzed short hair, unclothed, and dark red eyes, seams, and joints. In the other full body image, Murderbot is slightly shorter with slightly longer, shaggy hair and turquoise eyes, seams, and joints. It is wearing medium blue jeans, dark gray boots, a black shirt, and a dark blue hoodie. The hoodie has a pattern of lines and dots that shimmer in the light. On the sides of the sleeves are MURDERBOT written in Morse code in matte black.

On its lower abdomen, back of its head, and the upper left side of its back are triangular company logos. The logo on its back is a mix of hyperpigmentation, blood vessels, and simple computer chips. It pulses with light and color when Murderbot is online. Also on the back of its neck is a circular data port.

Murderbot’s expressions are also shown including, happiness, calmness, neutral/hiding emotions, anger, and sadness/anxiety. Its hair sticks up during strong emotions.

It has claws on its hands that are technically retractable and long fangs, both made of black metal.

Welp, here be my interpretation of Murderbot.

Thank you to @tindoiimu for input on the inorganic colors, @nerdwingblogs for giving me the idea that it changes colors (I get choice paralysis when it comes to color schemes), and both of them plus @tytoalbias for encouraging me to let my furriness bleed into its design.

Some extra bits of info

It starts out at 7 feet tall. Is later 6 feet and 11.2 inches tall

Its skin tone is based on the Subterranean cover for Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory (Book 4.5).

The skin and muscles on its head act similar to those on its back, and since the company did not intend its security units to have hair longer than a buzz cut, its head hair reacts the same as the finer hairs on the rest of its body

I’m explaining away the claws and fangs as the company trying to make their secunits more intimidating, but the real world reason is I keep calling Murderbot a cat with anxiety and just decided to run with it.

If you wanna see what I imagine is inside it click here.

Photo of a package of three astronaut-shaped lip gloss/oil keychains.
Photo of two of the astronaut keychains painted gray to resemble Murderbot in secunit armor. The one on the left is darker with the C-shaped logo of The Company from the Murderbot TV show on the faceplate. The one on the right is lighter with red accents.

For once me procrastinating on something has worked out in my favor.

Decided to make multiple versions, each based to varying degrees on the official illustrations, the TV show design, and my own headcanons. Now I just have to figure out where I put the third one and decide what to do with it.

And yes, the lip oil is still in there.

A reference sheet of a humanoid furry character. The reference sheet has two drawings of the character standing, one with clothes and one without. The character has tan fur, shaggy medium length brown hair, the face and ears of a lion, a short brown beard and mustache, a thin hourglass body, a long tail ending in a brown tuft of fur, and dark brown hooves for feet. In the clothed image she is wearing a black t-shirt with sunset colored stripes, blue jean shorts, black leggings, a pink flannel shirt wrapped around her waist, and a silver hoop earring on one of her ears. This is her main casual outfit. Between the two drawings are information on the character and her color palette.

Her drag/party outfit includes a large black blazer with a large collar, with sunset colored gemstones lining the collar and ends of the sleeves. There is a sunset-colored cravat around her net. Underneath her blazer is a pink vest and a black jumpsuit with a glittery sunset-colored swirl pattern on it. Between the two drawings is text that reads:

Three full body drawings of Matonne from different angles, front, back, and the side.
Seven drawings of Matonne’s head from the front, back, and side. In three of the drawings, Matonne has facial hair and longer hair. In three other drawings, Matonne has no facial hair and shorter hair. In one of the short-haired drawings, there are blue X’s on Matonne’s ears. In the last face drawing, she has facial hair and a ponytail. There is also a drawing of her mouth slightly open, showing her sharp teeth.

The image includes text reading:

Usually has facial hair and mid-length hair
Sometimes clean shaven and/or has shorter hair
X’s indicate where piercings are
Hair is occasionally tied back
Long sharp canines
Five drawings of Matonne expressing different emotions: happiness, amber, tired, sadness, and sultry. There is also a drawing of her tail resting on the ground.

Beside each picture is text reading:

Happiness:
Ears perk up
Mouth open when elated
More animated

Anger:
Ears curl backwards
Shoulders tense
Teeth bared
Growls when really angry

Tired (due to chronic pain):
Ears fall
Slight furrow in brow
Shoulders slack
Slight frown
Eyes half lidded

Sadness:
Ears fall down
Body tends to curl up or sink back

Sultry:
Becomes more theatrical
Hands fall to chest
Eyes half lidded
Speech is softer

Tail falls when sad or low energy

Decided to make some changes to my fursona and make some more extensive references for her. Wanted to give her facial hair and make her ears smaller to better show off her earrings and allow her to emote with them. I also removed the extra colors from her hair cause they were a bit difficult to work with at different angles.
