WHBB 2025 - Mod Call!

Dear fellow WinterHawkers, it is almost that time of the year again when we will be looking for artists and writers who are interested in joining us in another round of the Bang.

Before we can start, however, we have some planning and preparation to do. Due to personal and time reasons, we are looking to make some changes to the Mod team this year.

If you are interested in joining our little team and supporting us, please check out the event rules and possibly last year’s schedule to make sure you are ready to commit to joining us for the entire duration of the event and then fill out this so we know where your strengths are and what you could bring to the team. The form will stay open until 7 February.

Further updates on this year’s schedule will follow hopefully soon and we are excited to see many new and old friends in the Event.

For the wip ask game. What about The one they will hate me for?

Well, people will hate me for that.

People being specifically the Stucky fans I know, because this is one of the rare times I make Steve Rogers an actual character in my story, but he's kinda totally the bad guy.

I don't want to say too much just yet because I may put this up for claims in a big bang later this year, but you can have a little teaser.

“It’s Steve…” Bucky sobbed, his breathing barely steadier, but now Clint could hear a baby crying in the background. “Buck, what happened? Where’s Steve?” Clint was starting to truly get worried. He softly rocked Nate, shushing softly as he waited for Bucky’s answer. “He left.” Bucky pressed out, barely managing to stop crying long enough to stop talking. “He just left, Clint.” “To where?” Clint asked, stroking his hand over his son’s back and softly brushing a kiss onto his head. “And for how long?” “Not where, Clint.” Bucky scoffed, still clearly crying. “When.” Clint frowned, about to ask for clarification when Bucky continued already. “When he brought the stones back to their points in time, he didn’t come back.”

Every chapter. Every one shot. Every drabble. Every ficlet. Whether it’s on a personal website, a blog, or an archive. Whether you’ve read it a hundred times before or you’re reading it for the first time. Whether the fic was posted years ago or minutes ago. Whether you sign your name or leave your thoughts anonymously. Whether your comment is paragraphs in length or a few short words. Comment on every fanfic you read and enjoy in the month of January.

The Philosophy: Comments are what keep a fandom thriving and growing.

We don’t see comments as a transaction. They’re not a price paid for reading a fic. We see comments as an interaction, a way of building relationships. Comments are a courtesy, not a currency. [x]

Fandom is a relationship between dozens,hundreds, thousands, maybe millions of fans, and the only way for the greater fandom relationship to function, is for those fans to interact. One way to interact is by writing and reading fanfic. A writer prompts an interaction by posting their work; it is up to the reader to then acknowledge (or not acknowledge).

As one of our favorite blogs, @ao3commentoftheday​, said: [x]

“Comment if you can, but don’t be bullied or pressured into it. A comment should be written in the same spirit as the fic itself: wanting to reach out to other people who love the same fandom as you do. It’s not easy to do that, I know, and I don’t hold it against you at all if you can’t.”

The Only Rule: Be kind.

Be kind to your fandoms’ writers.

Please note that this challenge is to “comment on every fanfic you read and enjoy in the month of January.” As our fandom forebears were fond of saying, “Don’t like, don’t read.” For FaFiCoWriMo, we have taken that one step further by saying, “Don’t like, don’t comment.”

No matter how well-intentioned, critique is useless unless it comes from a place of trust. Unless you know an author personally and they have specifically asked for your critique, please keep it to yourself.

It costs zero of your currency and zero of your time to not be a jerk.

Be kind to yourself.

Summer Fic Reading Bingo

This is a low key summer reading challenge specifically for fandom. All you have to do to participate is get a bingo card, read a fic, leave a comment, and mark that square off on your card! We hope this will encourage you to step outside your go-to fandom paths and find something new and amazing.

Q: How do I sign up? A: Fill out this form!

Q: What are the dates of the challenge? A: This year the summer reading challenge starts on the summer solstice, June 21, 2023. You have until the fall equinox, September 21, 2023 to complete your bingo card.

Q: Who can participate? A: Anyone who reads fanfiction!

Q: Can I get a text-based bingo card instead of an image? A: Absolutely, please let us know you’d prefer that format when you sign up.

Q: Do I have to leave a comment to complete the square? A: Yes. I mean, we're not going to check up on you or anything, so it's the honor system. But let's give creators some love, shall we?

Q: Can I listen to podfic instead? A: Yup! The comment rule still applies, though.

Q: What if the thing I'm using to complete my square isn't on AO3? A: That's fine. You can reblog on Tumblr, leave a comment on a blog post, or otherwise let the creator know you enjoyed their story/art/podfic.

Q: What sort of things are on the bingo card? A: You can see our full list here.

Q: What if there is one of my triggers or something that squicks me on the list? A: Just let us know when you sign up and we'll make sure you get a card that doesn't have those things on it.

Q: What do you mean by [fill in the blank]? Does this fic count for that square? A: It's up to your interpretation - we wanted to leave things as broad as possible. If you're really stuck, send us an ask and we can talk about it!

Winterhawk Big Bang 2025 is here!

To all fans and shippers of WinterHawk! Author Sign Ups are open and Artists can sign up for a reminder now!

But first, for everyone who doesn’t know this event or everyone who needs a refresher since last year:

The Winterhawk Big Bang is a fun, relatively low-effort event, with just 7.5k words minimum for stories and flexible minimums on art and other collaborations. Artists is used as a broad term here and can include things like Moodboards, Playlists, and even Podfic!

Before you sign up, check the rules and this year's schedule first! After that, all you have to do is fill out our Sign-up Form. Be sure to send the form in on time; sign-ups close on 12 March! A confirmation email of your sign-up should be automatically sent to you within 48 hours - if you do not receive one please reach out to the mods via email (winterhawkbb@gmail.com), Tumblr Message or on our Discord server and we will try to figure out what went wrong.

If you're an artist interested in the event, you can sign up for a non-mandatory reminder before claims open! Be sure you won't miss the sign-up and all the wonderful stories that will be written in just a few months!
