I realized I’ve never posted a full-body draft of these clothes before *o*
So judging from the amount of surprised messages I got about it, I’m guessing a lot of you didn’t know that I’m Filipina, haha. Shout out to you guys! Here’s Mariang Sinukuan, one of my favorite Filipino folk tale characters. One of my dream projects is to do a comic about her…

asian creature: [philippine] m a r i a m a k i l i n g
in philippines, it is believed that there is a forest nymph who is the guardian spirit of the mountain - and a benefactor of the townspeople who depend upon the mountain’s resources. people claim that the mount makiling in philippines is itself shaped like the spirit - her face and two breasts being discernible in its various peaks.

In Philippine folklore, Oryol the naga was said to be the most terrifying being inside the forest of monsters. Queen of the fearsome mermaids called the Magindara, Oryol was unstoppable, and Handiong was a beloved king who was set to slay Oryol, knew this.
Though they battled, Handiong and Oryol came to the realization that they were equals in skill, and stopped and grew to admire each other, and eventually fell in love.
AHHH I have three thesis proposals due in 11 days! I already know that thematically I want to explore Asian and Asian American representation in popular American media, but still have to narrow it down.
Here’s some quick character sketches from one of my ideas. I was looking up Filipino legends and found the story of Mariang Sinukuan, a diwata or mountain fairy. She got a little bit of an attitude the more I drew her which is not completely inaccurate based on the stuff I read about her, haha. I might end up doing a big visual development project on her for thesis, but we’ll see how the other two proposals pan out first!
“Ang Munting Sirena” (late post)
now is the little mermaid’s turn. trying to simplify everything as possible and not putting any tattoos or any Filipino ethnic charms just to show she’s a Filipino mermaid. Their culture is unknown.and yes, she still has her mermaid hair when she transformed into human.

FILIPINO MYTHOLOGY: TRES MARIAS (Mountain Goddesses/Fairies)
Maria Cacao, Maria Makiling, and Maria Sinukuan are mountain goddesses (or fairies) with their own separate jurisdictions. The most famous of the three, Maria Makiling, is the guardian of Mount Makiling, located in Laguna. The mountain is said to resemble the profile of a woman, perhaps of Maria herself. Maria Cacao watches over Mount Lantoy in Cebu, and it is said that her domain houses the Cacao plants, a useful ingredient in most Filipino chocolate delicacies. Lastly, Maria Sinukuan holds dominion over Mount Arayat in Pampanga. There, she is said to bring forth bountiful harvests from the mountain’s fruit trees.
